Antecedent–Pronoun Agreement
A pronoun must agree with its antecedent (the noun it replaces) in number and gender.
Each student must bring his/her book. (singular)
The students brought their books. (plural)
The dog wagged its tail.
Singular antecedents (each, everyone, a student) take singular pronouns; plural antecedents take their.
Common mistake: "Everyone should bring their book" is now widely accepted, but in strict grammar singular antecedents take a singular pronoun (his/her).
