Degrees of Adverbs
Like adjectives, adverbs have three degrees: positive, comparative, and superlative.
| Positive | Comparative | Superlative |
|---|---|---|
| fast | faster | fastest |
| carefully | more carefully | most carefully |
| well | better | best (irregular) |
| soon | sooner | soonest |
She runs faster than me. (comparative)
He works the most carefully of all. (superlative)
Short adverbs add -er/-est (faster); adverbs ending in -ly use more/most (more quickly). Use than with comparatives.
Common mistake: "more faster" (double comparison). Use just faster. And "good" describing a verb becomes well → better → best.
