Major & Minor Word Classes
Major (open) classes carry meaning and keep growing: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs. Minor (closed) classes are grammatical "glue" and rarely add new members: pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, articles, determiners.
Major: dog, run, happy, quickly
Minor: he, in, and, the
We invent new nouns and verbs all the time (open classes); we almost never invent new prepositions or articles (closed classes).
Common mistake: Thinking small words are unimportant. Minor-class words (the, of, and) are essential for correct grammar.
