Modal Perfects (would have, had to)
To talk about the past with modals, use modal + have + past participle. Had to is the past form of "must."
I would have come, but I was busy.
You should have told me.
We had to leave early. (past necessity)
She must have forgotten. (a strong guess about the past)
"must" has no past form for necessity — use had to: "Yesterday I had to wait."
Common mistake: Writing "would of / should of." It is always "would have / should have" (it just sounds like "would've").
