Modals — Past Uses
To talk about the past with modals, use modal + have + past participle.
You should have studied. (but you didn't)
He must have forgotten. (a strong guess)
I could have helped. (it was possible)
She might have missed the bus.
The pattern is modal + have + past participle: should have gone, must have left, could have done.
Common mistake: Writing "should of" instead of "should have" (it sounds like "should've"). Always use have.
✏️ Test Yourself
1. You ___ (should / call) me.
2. She ___ (must / forget).
3. He ___ (could / help) us.
4. They ___ (might / leave) early.
