Modals — Present Uses
Modal verbs (can, may, must, should, will) add meaning to a main verb. Present uses:
| Modal | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| can | ability / permission | I can swim. |
| may | possibility / permission | It may rain. |
| must | necessity / strong rule | You must stop. |
| should | advice | You should rest. |
| will | future / willingness | I will help. |
After a modal, always use the base verb (no -s, no "to"): "She must go," "He can swim."
Common mistake: "He cans," "She must to go." Modals never take -s and are not followed by "to."
