Negative Questions

A negative question uses a negative helping verb (isn't, don't, can't, didn't…), often to show surprise or to seek agreement.

Don't you like it?

Isn't she lovely?

Can't you come?

Didn't they tell you?

Negative questions often expect the answer "yes": "Aren't you tired? — Yes, I am."

Common mistake: Answering confusingly. In English, answer about the fact: "Don't you like it?" → "Yes (I do like it)" or "No (I don't)."

✏️ Test Yourself

1. You like tea.

2. She is ready.

3. They came.

4. You can swim.
