Parts of Speech (in Sequence)
Every English word belongs to one of eight parts of speech — its job in a sentence.
| Part | Job | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Noun | names a person/place/thing | dog, Ali, city |
| Pronoun | replaces a noun | he, she, it, they |
| Verb | an action or state | run, eat, is |
| Adjective | describes a noun | big, red, happy |
| Adverb | describes a verb/adjective | quickly, very |
| Preposition | shows place/time | in, on, at |
| Conjunction | joins words/clauses | and, but, or |
| Interjection | shows sudden feeling | Oh! Wow! |
Example sentence (all working together): - Wow! The happy boy quickly ran to school and smiled.
The same word can change its job: book (noun) vs to book a ticket (verb). Look at how it's used.
Common mistake: Mixing adjectives and adverbs: a quick runner (adjective) vs he runs quickly (adverb).
