Positive & Negative Sentences
A positive sentence says something is true. A negative sentence says something is not true. To make "to be" negative, add not.
| Positive | Negative |
|---|---|
| I am happy. | I am not happy. |
| He is here. | He is not (isn't) here. |
| They are ready. | They are not (aren't) ready. |
For action verbs, make the negative with do not / does not: - I like tea. → I don't like tea. - She likes tea. → She doesn't like tea.
It is cold. → It isn't hot.
We play cricket. → We don't play hockey.
Short forms are common in speaking: is not = isn't, are not = aren't, do not = don't, does not = doesn't.
Common mistake: Using two negatives ("I don't have no pen"). Say "I don't have a pen."
✏️ Test Yourself
1. He is sad.
2. They are late.
3. I like coffee.
4. She plays tennis.
