Simple Commands (Imperatives)
An imperative gives a command, an instruction, or a request. It begins with the base verb and has no subject (the subject "you" is understood).
Open the door.
Sit down, please.
Listen carefully.
Don't run. (negative — add don't)
Don't be late.
We add please to be polite, and don't to tell someone not to do something.
Imperatives are great for instructions and signs: Push. Pull. Stop. Keep left.
Common mistake: Adding a subject ("You open the door" sounds like a statement). For a command, just say "Open the door."
