Singular & Plural Nouns (Adding 's')
Most nouns become plural by adding -s. Some need -es or change form.
| Rule | Singular → Plural |
|---|---|
| add -s (most) | book → books |
| ends in s, x, ch, sh → -es | box → boxes, bus → buses |
| consonant + y → -ies | baby → babies, city → cities |
| ends in f/fe → -ves | leaf → leaves, knife → knives |
| irregular | man → men, child → children, foot → feet |
one apple → three apples
one box → two boxes
one lady → many ladies
one child → two children
If a noun ends in a consonant + y, change y → ies (baby → babies). If it's a vowel + y, just add -s (boy → boys).
Common mistake: Writing "babys" or "citys." After a consonant, y → ies: babies, cities.
