The Verb "To Be" Across All Tenses
"To be" changes form in every tense. Knowing all its forms lets you describe the past, present, and future.
| Tense | Forms | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Present | am / is / are | I am here. |
| Past | was / were | They were home. |
| Future | will be | She will be late. |
| Present perfect | have/has been | He has been ill. |
I am a student now; I was a child before; I will be a teacher one day.
Master the basic forms first (am/is/are → was/were → will be), then add the perfect forms (have/has been).
Common mistake: "We was" / "He were." Use was with I/he/she/it, were with you/we/they.
