Verb To Be: I am / You are / He is / She is
"To be" is the most important verb in English. We use it to say who or what someone or something is, and to describe people and things.
| Subject | "to be" | Example |
|---|---|---|
| I | am | I am a student. |
| You / We / They | are | You are my friend. |
| He / She / It | is | She is a teacher. |
We use "to be" for: names (I am Ali), jobs (She is a doctor), feelings (I am happy), age (He is ten), and place (They are at home).
Short forms (used in speaking): I'm, you're, he's, she's, it's, we're, they're.
Match the subject to the right form: I → am, he/she/it → is, you/we/they → are.
Common mistake: "He are" or "They is." Remember: he/she/it → is, you/we/they → are.
