Verbs & Their Types (action, state, transitive, intransitive…)
Verbs come in several types:
| Type | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Action (dynamic) | a physical/mental action | run, think |
| State (stative) | a condition/feeling | know, love, seem |
| Transitive | needs an object | She read a book. |
| Intransitive | takes no object | He slept. |
| Linking | links subject to a description | She is kind. |
Transitive: I eat rice. (object = rice)
Intransitive: The baby smiled. (no object)
Linking: The soup smells good.
Transitive verbs take an object (eat food); intransitive don't (arrive). Linking verbs (be, seem, become) join the subject to a word that describes it.
Common mistake: Adding an object to an intransitive verb ("He slept the bed"). Say "He slept in the bed."
✏️ Test Yourself
1. She **wrote** a letter.
2. The baby **smiled**.
3. He **kicked** the ball.
4. They **arrived** late.
