'What' & 'How' Questions (with to be)
What asks about a thing; How asks about manner, condition, or way. With the verb to be, put am/is/are right after the question word.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is this? | It is a book. |
| What are these? | They are pens. |
| How are you? | I am fine. |
| How is the weather? | It is sunny. |
What is your name? — My name is Sara.
How are your parents? — They are well.
Order = Question word + am/is/are + subject? Match be to the subject (What is it? / What are they?).
Common mistake: Mixing "do" with "be": say "What is this?" not "What does this is?"
