Word vs Sentence
A word is a single unit of meaning. A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete idea, begins with a capital letter, and ends with a full stop (or ? / !).
| Word | Sentence |
|---|---|
| dog | The dog is black. |
| run | I run every morning. |
| happy | She is happy today. |
A sentence needs at least a subject + verb: Birds fly.
If a group of words doesn't give a complete idea, it's not a sentence yet. "The big dog" = not a sentence. "The big dog barks." = a sentence.
Common mistake: Writing a sentence with no verb ("My friend very kind"). Add a verb: "My friend is very kind."
✏️ Test Yourself
1. "happy day"
2. "She is happy."
3. "The sun is hot."
4. "in the morning"
