Aspiration (pat vs bat)
Aspiration is the small puff of air that comes after p, t, k at the start of a stressed word. p is aspirated (puff); b is not.
pat — a puff of air on the p
bat — no puff
top — puff on t
kite — puff on k
Hold your hand close to your mouth: you feel air on "pin" but not on "bin."
Common mistake: Saying p, t, k with no breath, so they sound like b, d, g. Add the puff at the start of a word.
