Consonant Sounds & Their Classification
Consonants are grouped by where in the mouth we make the sound. Knowing the place helps you pronounce each sound clearly.
| Group | Where it's made | Sounds |
|---|---|---|
| Bilabial | both lips | p, b, m |
| Labiodental | lower lip + top teeth | f, v |
| Dental | tongue + teeth | th (think, this) |
| Alveolar | ridge behind the teeth | t, d, s, z, n, l |
| Palatal | roof of the mouth | sh, "su" in measure, y |
| Velar | back of the mouth | k, g, ng (sing) |
| Glottal | the throat | h |
Lips together → p, b, m (pat, bat, mat)
Lip + teeth → f, v (fan, van)
Back of mouth → k, g (kit, get)
Put your hand near your mouth and feel where each sound is made — p/b/m use both lips; f/v use lip and teeth.
Common mistake: Mixing /p/ and /f/ or /b/ and /v/ — they are made in different places. /p,b/ use two lips; /f,v/ use lip + teeth.
