Phonetic Rules & Sound Blending
Blending means joining single sounds to read a word. English spelling and sound don't always match, so we learn sound patterns.
/k/ + /a/ + /t/ → cat
/sh/ + /i/ + /p/ → ship
/s/ + /t/ + /o/ + /p/ → stop
Some letter pairs make one sound: sh, ch, th, ph (=/f/), ck (=/k/).
Sound out a new word slowly, blend the sounds, then say it at normal speed.
Common mistake: Reading each letter separately for digraphs. In "ship," sh is one sound /ʃ/, not /s/ + /h/.
✏️ Test Yourself
1. /f/ + /i/ + /sh/
2. /s/ + /t/ + /o/ + /p/
3. /ch/ + /i/ + /p/
4. /b/ + /e/ + /d/
