Root, Sky & Grass Letters
When we write small (lowercase) letters, they sit in three "zones." Learning these zones gives you neat, clear handwriting.
| Type | Where it sits | Letters |
|---|---|---|
| Root letters | rest on the line | a c e i m n o r s u v w x z |
| Sky letters | reach up high (ascenders) | b d f h k l t |
| Grass letters | hang below the line (descenders) | g j p q y |
cat — all root letters, all on the line.
dog — d reaches up (sky), o sits on the line (root), g hangs down (grass).
play — p and y are grass letters; l is a sky letter.
Sky letters go up, grass letters go down, root letters stay in the middle. Practising on lined paper makes your writing clear and even.
Common mistake: Writing grass letters (g, j, p, q, y) sitting on the line instead of below it — their tails should dip under the line.
