Syllabification
A syllable is a beat in a word, built around a vowel sound. Counting syllables helps with spelling and pronunciation.
cat = 1 (cat)
water = 2 (wa-ter)
beautiful = 3 (beau-ti-ful)
education = 4 (e-du-ca-tion)
Count the vowel sounds (not vowel letters) — that's usually the number of syllables. Clap once for each beat.
Common mistake: Counting silent letters. "Cake" has one syllable, not two (the final -e is silent).
