Word Stress & Sentence Rhythm
In every word of two or more syllables, one syllable is stressed (louder and longer). In a sentence, we stress the important (content) words.
TEA-cher (stress on first syllable)
ba-NA-na (stress on the middle)
com-PU-ter
In sentences, stress the content words: "I WANT to GO to the MARket."
Stress the content words (nouns, main verbs, adjectives) and say small words (a, the, to, of) quickly and softly.
Common mistake: Stressing the wrong syllable changes the rhythm and can confuse listeners. Learn the stress with each new word.
