Greetings & Their Times (in detail)
We choose a greeting based on the time of day. Using the right one sounds natural and polite.
| Time | Greeting |
|---|---|
| Before 12 noon | Good morning |
| 12 noon – about 5 p.m. | Good afternoon |
| After about 5 p.m. | Good evening |
| Leaving / going to sleep at night | Good night |
(9 a.m.) Good morning! How are you?
(3 p.m.) Good afternoon, sir.
(7 p.m., meeting) Good evening, everyone.
(11 p.m., leaving) Good night!
"Good morning/afternoon/evening" can be used both to greet and to say goodbye at that time of day.
Common mistake: Using "Good night" to greet someone at night. It is only for leaving or going to bed — to greet at night, say Good evening.
