Greetings & Their Times (in detail)

We choose a greeting based on the time of day. Using the right one sounds natural and polite.

TimeGreeting
Before 12 noonGood morning
12 noon – about 5 p.m.Good afternoon
After about 5 p.m.Good evening
Leaving / going to sleep at nightGood night

(9 a.m.) Good morning! How are you?

(3 p.m.) Good afternoon, sir.

(7 p.m., meeting) Good evening, everyone.

(11 p.m., leaving) Good night!

"Good morning/afternoon/evening" can be used both to greet and to say goodbye at that time of day.

Common mistake: Using "Good night" to greet someone at night. It is only for leaving or going to bed — to greet at night, say Good evening.
