Hello, Hi & Goodbye
Greetings are the words we use to start and end a conversation. Choosing the right one is polite and friendly.
| Greeting | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Hi / Hello | meeting anyone (Hi is friendly, Hello is for everyone) |
| Good morning | before 12 noon |
| Good afternoon | 12 noon until evening |
| Good evening | in the evening |
| Goodbye / Bye | when you leave |
| See you / See you later | a friendly goodbye |
Hi, Ali! How are you?
Good morning, everyone.
Goodbye! See you tomorrow.
"Hi" is informal (for friends), "Hello" works everywhere, and "Good morning/afternoon/evening" is the polite choice.
Common mistake: "Good night" is not a greeting to start a talk — it is only used when leaving at night or going to sleep. To greet at night, say Good evening.
✏️ Test Yourself
1. You meet a friend at 9 a.m.
2. You are leaving in the day
3. You greet your teacher at 2 p.m.
4. You are going to bed
