Abbreviations & Acronyms
An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word (Dr. for Doctor). An acronym is made from the first letters of several words and read as a word or letters (NASA, UN).
Abbreviations: Mr. (Mister), etc. (etcetera), Jan. (January), kg (kilogram)
Acronyms: UN (United Nations), PIN, NASA, ATM
An acronym is read as a word or its letters (NASA, U-N); an abbreviation is just a short spelling you still read in full (Dr. = "Doctor").
Common mistake: Forgetting the full stop in some abbreviations (Mr., etc.) — though styles vary, be consistent.
