Compound & Primary Words
A primary (root) word stands alone with its own meaning (sun, book, rain). A compound word is made by joining two words into one (sunflower, notebook, raincoat).
| Word 1 | Word 2 | Compound |
|---|---|---|
| sun | flower | sunflower |
| tooth | brush | toothbrush |
| class | room | classroom |
| rain | coat | raincoat |
A compound word's meaning often comes from its two parts: rain + coat = a coat for the rain.
Common mistake: Adding a space where the compound is one word: notebook and blackboard are single words.
