Contractions
A contraction joins two words into one, using an apostrophe ( ' ) to replace the missing letters.
| Full form | Contraction |
|---|---|
| I am | I'm |
| do not | don't |
| she is | she's |
| they will | they'll |
| cannot | can't |
| it is / it has | it's |
I'm ready. (= I am)
They're here. (= They are)
He doesn't know. (= does not)
The apostrophe stands for the dropped letters: do not → don't. Contractions are common in speaking and informal writing.
Common mistake: Confusing it's (it is) with its (belonging to it), and they're/their/there. "It's raining" = it is.
