Telling the Time
We tell the time with o'clock, past, and to.
| Clock | We say |
|---|---|
| 3:00 | three o'clock |
| 3:15 | quarter past three |
| 3:30 | half past three |
| 3:45 | quarter to four |
| 3:10 | ten past three |
| 3:50 | ten to four |
It's seven o'clock.
The class starts at half past nine.
I wake up at quarter to six.
Use past for the first half of the hour and to for the second half (after :30).
Common mistake: Saying "half to" — there is no "half to." Use half past (3:30 = half past three).
✏️ Test Yourself
1. 5:00
2. 6:30
3. 7:45
4. 2:15
