Review Writing: The Book Review

A book review describes and critically evaluates a (usually recent) book, so readers can decide whether it is worth their time and money. It is short — about 500–750 words — and, unlike a purely descriptive book report, it includes evaluation.

Structure of a book review:

PartContents
Bibliographic infotitle, author(s), publisher, date, edition, pages, price, ISBN
Introductionan anecdote or quotation; author, title, type, subject; background; the book's thesis and your initial appraisal
Main bodydescription (summary, with quotations) + critical evaluation (strengths and weaknesses)
Conclusionsum up strengths/weaknesses; say whether you recommend it and who would benefit

The description can use criteria such as content, the author's purpose, the intended audience, arguments and themes, sources, and organisation. The evaluation then questions each: Is anything essential left out? Has the author succeeded? Are the sources strong? Is it well organised? (For fiction, describe and evaluate setting, plot, characters, language and voice instead of arguments and sources.)

Useful language: "This text is divided into four main chapters focusing on…"; "The weakest area of the book is…"; "The book should appeal to those who…" Keep your views distinct from the author's by referring to "the author" or "the book."

Tip: The evaluation is the most important part, but the description may still take up half the body — it lays the foundation for your judgements.

Common mistake: Writing a book report (description only) instead of a book review. A review must critically evaluate, not just summarise.
