The Exemplification Essay
Exemplification means "showing by giving examples." An exemplification essay supports its thesis with well-chosen examples, organised into an introduction, body, and conclusion. There are three types:
| Type | How it works |
|---|---|
| Extended example | one detailed example explored across the whole essay |
| Multiple examples | a different example in each paragraph |
| Themed examples | several linked examples per paragraph, grouped by theme |
Arrange the examples (or the aspects of one example) by chronology, importance, or complexity. Signal phrases: for example, for instance, such as, to illustrate, in this case.
Model essay — "What is corporate social responsibility (CSR)?": after defining CSR, the writer gives three company examples — Starbucks (pay equity, ethical coffee), Salesforce (paid volunteering), and Deloitte (volunteer hours) — one per paragraph (the multiple examples type), then concludes that more CSR would make the world better.
Tip: Choose examples that genuinely prove your point, and cite them where they come from sources (e.g. Starbucks, 2017). Order them by importance or complexity for greatest effect.
Common mistake: Giving vague or unrelated examples. Each example must clearly illustrate the thesis; a precise, relevant example is worth more than several weak ones.
