From Paragraph to Composition: Expanding a Paragraph
A composition (essay) is a longer piece built from several paragraphs. To expand a paragraph into a composition, turn the topic sentence into a thesis statement, and turn each supporting point into its own body paragraph with its own topic sentence, details, and examples. Add an introduction and a conclusion.
| Paragraph | grows into | Composition |
|---|---|---|
| Topic sentence | → | thesis statement (introduction) |
| Each supporting detail | → | a body paragraph |
| Closing sentence | → | conclusion |
Example: A paragraph whose topic sentence is "There are two reasons I chose Bingston University" expands into an essay: an introduction ending in the thesis, one body paragraph on cost, one on the agriculture programme, and a conclusion that restates the choice.
Tip: Each body paragraph should develop one point from the original paragraph. Keep the same logical order you used in the paragraph.
Common mistake: Simply making the paragraph longer with filler. Expansion means developing each point into a full, focused paragraph — not padding.
