Paragraph Development: Enumeration
Enumeration means developing a paragraph by listing points, reasons, or items one after another. It is one of the clearest ways to organise ideas.
Key tools:
Enumerators — words that count items: first, second, third, finally; one, two, three.
Listing signals — phrases that introduce items: to begin with, next, another, also, in addition, last of all.
Order: list points in ascending order (least → most important) or descending order (most → least important).
Example paragraph (enumeration):
There are three reasons to learn English. First, it opens job opportunities. Second, it connects you with people worldwide. Finally, it gives access to a huge amount of knowledge online.
Tip: Use enumerators and listing signals to guide the reader from one point to the next — they make a paragraph easy to follow.
Common mistake: Listing points with no signal words, so the reader can't tell where one point ends and the next begins. Add first / next / finally.
