Paragraph Structure

A paragraph is a group of sentences about one main idea. A good paragraph has three parts and follows simple rules.

PartJob
Topic sentencestates the main idea (usually first)
Supporting sentencesexplain it with details, examples, facts
Concluding sentencesums it up (last)

Length: usually 5–8 sentences.

Indentation: start the first line a little inwards (or leave a blank line between paragraphs).

Unity: every sentence must connect to the one main idea — no off-topic sentences.

One paragraph = one idea. When you start a new idea, start a new paragraph.

Common mistake: Putting two different topics in one paragraph. If the idea changes, begin a new paragraph.
