The Process Essay
A process essay explains how to do something or how something happens, step by step, in a logical (usually chronological) order. The thesis names the steps, and each body paragraph develops one step with detail and reasons.
Model essay — "How to Live a Happy Life": the thesis states that to live happily, people should build relationships, be grateful, and help others. Each body paragraph then develops one of these steps — explaining why it increases happiness (stronger connections reduce loneliness; gratitude shifts perspective to the positive; serving others lifts both people) — and the conclusion ties the three steps back to perspective over possessions.
| Step (from the thesis) | Developed in body paragraph |
|---|---|
| Build relationships | less loneliness, advice network, belonging |
| Be grateful | focus on the positive, changed perspective |
| Help others | lifts others, strengthens bonds and gratitude |
Tip: Give each step its own paragraph and explain why it works, not just what to do. Use sequence signals (first, in addition, finally) to keep the order clear.
Common mistake: Listing steps with no explanation. A process essay should explain the reason and benefit of each step, not read like a bare instruction list.
