The Thesis Statement

The thesis statement (or just "thesis") is the most important part of the introduction. It tells the reader the specific topic of the essay, often lists the main (controlling) ideas the body will discuss, and usually indicates how the essay will be organised.

Thesis with no subtopics stated:

While cars have undoubted advantages, they also have significant drawbacks.

This tells us the specific topic (advantages and disadvantages of cars) and the organisation (advantages first, disadvantages second).

Thesis with subtopics stated explicitly:

While cars have undoubted advantages, of which their convenience is the most apparent, they have significant drawbacks, most notably pollution and traffic problems.

This richer thesis adds the main ideas (convenience, pollution, traffic problems) — signalling that the body will probably have three paragraphs.

Tip: A strong thesis answers three questions: What is the specific topic? What main ideas will be covered? In what order? Listing the subtopics gives the reader (and you) a clear map of the essay.

Common mistake: Writing a thesis that only names a topic ("This essay is about cars"). A thesis must make a claim and preview the controlling ideas.
