The Topic Sentence

The topic sentence tells the reader the main idea of the paragraph. It has two parts: the topic (the subject) and a controlling idea (what you will say about it).

Example: "Cricket (topic) is the most popular sport in Pakistan (controlling idea)."

More examples: - My city is a wonderful place to live. - Reading books has many benefits.

The controlling words/phrases limit what the paragraph will discuss (e.g., "many benefits" → the paragraph lists benefits).

A strong topic sentence is not too broad and not too narrow — it can be fully explained in one paragraph.

Common mistake: Writing a topic sentence that is just a fact with nothing to explain ("Cricket is a sport."). Add a controlling idea: "Cricket is a sport that builds teamwork."
