The Writing Process

Good writers don't write an essay in one go. They follow a process with six steps:

The six steps

  1. Understand the title — underline key words. Is it asking you to discuss, compare, or evaluate?
  2. Brainstorm — write down every idea. Don't judge them yet.
  3. Research — find evidence and examples. Note your sources for citations.
  4. Outline — organize ideas into introduction → body paragraphs → conclusion.
  5. Draft — write quickly. Don't stop to fix small mistakes.
  6. Edit & proofread — first fix big issues (structure, ideas), then small ones (grammar, spelling).

💡 Tip: spend as much time on steps 1–4 as on the writing itself. Planning is half the work.

Paragraph structure

Every body paragraph needs:

  • A topic sentence — the main idea, first sentence.
  • Supporting sentences — evidence, examples, explanation.
  • A concluding/linking sentence — connect to the next paragraph.

2. The first sentence of a body paragraph is called the ___ sentence.

3. When drafting, you should…
